He started the track and football programs at James Madison University in 1972, serving as the head track coach until 1976 and the head football coach until 1985. During his coaching career he received coach of the year honors on numerous occasions, including the Kodak College Division District III Coach of the Year in 1975. He was inducted into the James Madison University Sport Hall of Fame in 1994. He received his Ed.D. in sport psychology from the University of Virginia in 1990. His teaching interests include coaching education, sport performance enhancement, athletic administration, and social-psychological issues in sport. His research interests are leadership issues in sport and coaching education. He works with athletic teams and individuals in performance enhancement. He has presented at numerous local, regional, and national events/conferences in motivation, leadership development, goal setting, philosophy development, and coaching education issues. He has published in philosophy development, goal setting, and gender issues in sport. He is an avid fisherman and keeps active by running and weight lifting. Corey Reffner received the bachelor of science degree in political science from James Madison University in 1994. He is currently completing his master of science degree in Kinesiology, Athletic Administration and Coaching at James Madison University.
